LA LLORONA

Horror Reverberator

Your ears already know something is wrong.

A reverb engineered from the inside of your skull outward.

CARBON FIBER PLUGINS

Not Just A Reverb.
A Psychoacoustic Event.

Most reverbs simulate rooms. La Llorona simulates how your brain understands space under threat. Built on a gammatone filterbank — the same frequency organization used by your own cochlea — every reflection in La Llorona passes through a model that knows exactly which frequencies trigger alarm, which induce disorientation, and which make a sound feel like it's behind you.

This is not about distortion. It's not about lo-fi aesthetics. It's about acoustic truth weaponized for horror. When you engage La Llorona, you're applying precise psychoacoustic pressure at the frequencies your auditory cortex is most vulnerable to.

The result? Spaces that feel alive. Spaces that feel watched. Spaces that feel wrong.

DREAD

Subconscious Unease & Tension

Compresses the reverb tail into frequencies that trigger natural alarm instincts. Instead of sounding like an ordinary effect, it fills the space with quiet tension—instantly making the listener feel like something is deeply wrong.

PARANOIA

Spatial Confusion & Ghostly Presence

Blurs the stereo field so your ears can no longer pinpoint where sounds are coming from. It introduces eerie, whisper-like vocal resonances, creating the hair-raising feeling that an invisible presence is in the room with you.

AGONY

Fractured Reality & Screeching Chaos

Warps pitch stability and tears the reverb reflections into harsh, unstable fragments. The space stops behaving like a normal room and sounds like reality itself is fracturing, screeching, and breaking apart.

Behind-the-Head 3D Stalking

Tricks the human brain into hearing echoes directly behind your head and neck. It creates an involuntary reflex that makes the listener feel physically stalked and compelled to look behind them.

SPECTRAL RESOLUTION

ERB Filterbank.
Your Cochlea, Modeled.

Equivalent Rectangular Bandwidth (ERB) is the frequency resolution model of the human cochlea. La Llorona's entire processing chain runs on a gammatone filterbank organized along the ERB scale — meaning the plugin hears sound the same way your ears do.

The ERB Resolution control lets you choose between 32, 64, 128, or 256 bands. More bands means finer spectral resolution: psychoacoustic engines work with greater precision, targeting frequencies more exactly, producing more convincing spatial cues.

128 and 256 band modes are ideal for offline rendering when CPU budget is not a constraint.

THE ORIGIN

La Llorona

The Weeping Woman of Nicaragua

Along the rivers of Nicaragua, on moonless nights when the fog clings low to the water, they say you can hear her. A sound that is not quite weeping and not quite wind — a cry that settles somewhere in the chest and refuses to leave. La Llorona. The Weeping Woman.

The legend of La Llorona is one of the oldest and most widespread in Central American folklore, rooted deep in Nicaraguan, Mexican, and broader Latin American oral tradition. In its most ancient form, it tells of a woman of great beauty who fell in love with a wealthy man who would not marry her. Desperate, she drowned their children in the river — only to be rejected anyway.

Condemned by her own act and rejected by the afterlife, her spirit was cursed to wander the rivers and waterways for eternity, weeping for the children she destroyed. Her cry — ¡Ay, mis hijos! ("Oh, my children!") — echoes across the water on dark nights. Those who hear it are said to be marked. In some tellings, those who follow the sound vanish into the water themselves.

"
She cries because she searches. She searches because she knows she will never find. And on the water, in the dark, her weeping is the sound of a space that cannot close — a reverb that will never, ever decay.
"

In Nicaragua, La Llorona is not merely a ghost story. She is a cultural presence representing grief, condemnation, and the way trauma echoes across generations — like a sound in a vast stone cathedral, never fully stopping.

Why We Named This Plugin After Her

A reverb is fundamentally a space that will not let go of sound. A space that keeps reflecting, keeps returning, keeps pressing the original event back at you from every direction. La Llorona is exactly this: a grief that cannot find resolution, a presence that fills every corner of every space it inhabits.

When we set out to build a horror reverb grounded in psychoacoustics — one that would make the listener feel watched, surrounded, unable to locate the source of what they were hearing — there was only one name for it. La Llorona. The sound of a space that will never be at peace. The reverb that cannot stop weeping.

She is the reason the Paranoia engine places sound in spaces where it cannot be located. She is the reason the Psycho engine places the reverb behind you. She is the reason the spaces of this plugin do not behave like physics — they behave like grief.
